Welcome to The Opposition

June 8, 2011

For the last year or so, it has been my goal to begin working on a student-run website that took a pragmatic approach to politics in this country as well as around the world.  While there is certainly no shortage of Canadian, youth-led websites about politics, many seemed to focus predominantly on a handful of issues, like the environment, tuition fees and/or education.  As I read more and more, I found myself less enthused about these sites and in a very reactionary, knee-jerk style, had a sudden urge to create my own blog.  Apathy got the better of me though, as it has a tendency to do, and I put it off until very recently when, being after inspired by friends creating their own blogs, I decided to quit dragging my heels and do something about it.

So.  Here we are.  This blog (hopefully soon to be a full-fledged website) is The Opposition.  No, it’s not a shill for the NDP/Liberal/Bloc/Green “opposition” in the House of Commons as the name could suggest.  This blog really has no affiliation and is in no way, shape or form affiliated with any political parties that exist within Canada.  The writers will be all over the political spectrum, from left of the NDP to right of the Conservatives.  Essentially, if this blog is to serve any purpose, it’s to eliminate partisan bickering and talking points from the conversation.  The aim of The Opposition is to have honest people talking about honest ideas.  No shilling; no hyperbolic sensationalism; no anti-corporate or anti-government hindmive; no doublespeak or rabid partisanship.   The Opposition will strive to up the level of discourse as well as inform and educate those on a variety of issues.

Within the next week, the blog will start turning out articles daily.  Hopefully you’ll return often and recommend us to your friends.  If not, we’ll pretend to understand (but won’t really understand — plus we’ll probably shun you and remove you from our Facebook) but ideally you’ll keep coming back.  If you have any suggestions or feel like debating various points, leave a message and don’t be shy.  Thanks for stopping by.
